Job Title: Construction Plant Operator
Salary: £38,000 per annum + Overtime (Paid)
Working Hours: 50 hours per week


Overall Purpose of the Job:

To operate various types of construction plant and machinery, including 360-degree excavators, dump trucks, and small plant and machinery, in a safe and efficient manner to support construction projects. The role involves ensuring all machinery is operated according to the site’s requirements and safety standards.


General Responsibilities:

  • Operate construction plant machinery, including 360-degree excavators (10 tonne to 25 tonne), dump trucks, and small plant machinery, to complete various tasks on-site.

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of all equipment, following safety protocols and manufacturer instructions.

  • Carry out pre-operational checks and routine maintenance on machinery to ensure they are in good working order.

  • Report any faults, damages, or malfunctions to the site manager and follow procedures for repairs and service.

  • Assist with loading, unloading, and transporting materials and machinery around the site as required.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations and procedures during plant operations.

  • Maintain clear communication with the site team, ensuring that all operations are aligned with the project plan and safety guidelines.

  • Help ensure the site is organized, clean, and safe to operate within, minimizing risks to personnel and the public.

  • Liaise with other operatives and site managers to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and to the required standard.

Primary Responsibilities :

Specific Responsibilities / Key Skills:

  • Machine Operation:

    • Operate 360-degree excavators (10 tonne to 25 tonne), dump trucks, and small plant machinery safely and efficiently.

    • Follow site instructions to perform tasks such as digging, lifting, transporting materials, and other operations as needed.

  • Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance:

    • Conduct daily checks of machinery, including fluid levels, safety features, and equipment functionality.

    • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating, and checking safety equipment.

    • Report any issues with the machinery immediately to the supervisor or plant mechanic.

  • Health and Safety Compliance:

    • Adhere to all health and safety regulations while operating machinery on-site.

    • Ensure that work is completed in a safe manner, both for self and others on-site.

    • Report any unsafe conditions or accidents to the site manager or health and safety officer immediately.

    • Participate in daily briefings and toolbox talks related to health and safety.

  • Site Organization:

    • Assist in the organization and maintenance of the site, ensuring that materials and equipment are appropriately stored and easily accessible.

    • Communicate effectively with other site workers to coordinate the completion of tasks and ensure smooth operation.

  • Team Collaboration:

    • Work with other operators and construction workers to complete tasks efficiently and safely.

    • Follow the directions of the site manager and foreman regarding plant operations and site requirements.


Work Experience / Technical Skills Required:

  • Essential:

    • At least 5 years’ experience operating 360-degree excavators (10 tonne to 25 tonne), dump trucks, and small plant machinery.

    • Demonstrated experience in safely operating heavy construction machinery on large-scale construction sites.

    • Proficiency in performing routine maintenance and pre-operational checks on machinery.

    • Strong understanding of construction site operations and ability to adapt to varying tasks.

  • Preferred:

    • Experience working on large-scale construction projects (e.g., airports, sea ports, highways, industrial projects).

    • Ability to work in a team environment and follow site-specific instructions.

    • Knowledge of site-specific safety standards and operational procedures.


Educational Qualifications / Training Record:

  • Required:

    • Relevant plant operator certifications (e.g., CPCS, NPORS) for 360-degree excavators, dump trucks, and small plant machinery.

    • Valid driving license (Full, Clean with no more than 6 points).

  • Preferred:

    • Additional qualifications in plant operation, health and safety (e.g., CITB, IOSH).

    • Further training in specific plant and machinery operation.


Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all machinery is operated safely and within legal requirements.

  • Adhere to site-specific health and safety regulations.

  • Participate in daily safety briefings and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.

  • Report any safety hazards or incidents to the site manager or health and safety officer.

  • Follow environmental best practices when operating machinery, such as minimizing emissions and avoiding spills.
